John began driving in 1985 at the age of seventeen (mainly at fairs in Vermont). After graduating high school, John moved to Saratoga in 1988 and worked for Greg Decker and Brian Walker. In 1993, John picked up a small stable and started driving a little bit.
In 1996, John won the Johnny Page award for best young driver. In 1998, John had his best year as a driver (424-49-51-60 .230 $109,532) finishing seventh in the Saratoga driving standings.
